Gamma Chi, Washington State University

Alpha Tau Omega was founded in 1865, directly after the Civil War. The fraternity’s purpose was to bind men together from the North and South. The Gamma Chi chapter here at WSU was started in 1928 and has followed the ideals of its three founding fathers. ATO has set the standards for encouraging brotherhood that last a lifetime.

The Gamma Chi chapter has continued to be one of the top chapters in the nation. Our house is consistently among the top five in grades, and in recent years, our freshmen have managed to achieve first in grades throughout the Greek system. This past year we have devoted much of our time to community projects, philanthropies, involvement in various leadership organizations, as well as having an outstanding intramural program. All money that is raised is donated to our own charity, the Oprea Students with Cancer Fund, created in memory of Gunnar Oprea, who passed away from cancer in the Fall of 2000.

Through public relations we continue to keep good ties with our national headquarters and our distinguished alumni. We have won our honorable mention True Merit Cup the past 3 years, the national ATO recognition of chapter excellence. Our national fraternity also offers many scholarships and leadership opportunities, such as the Leadershape Institute, a nationwide institute founded by ATO to develop youth leaders throughout our society.

We had a very successful recruitment this past year, pledging 24 new members. Our goal is to encourage them to grow and to become leaders in the community, as well as within the chapter, giving us the name"The Leadership Fraternity."
