Frequently Asked Questions about Greek Life @WSU

What is Summer Recruitment?

Summert Recruitment is an informal process that takes place between June 1st and August 15th where potential new members, PNMs, can attend fraternity organized events.

What is Fall Recruitment?

Fall Recruitment is a two week long event where potential new members, PNMs, will get to hang out and get to know fraternity men and their chapters.  There will be organized events that students can attend to get house tours and more information as well as have a good time with fraternities.

When can I register for Fall Recruitment?

Now! Please email: ifcrecruitment@wsu.edu

Can I register for Summer Recruitment?

Yes and no.  If you sign up for Fall Recruitment and click the check box saying you want to participate in Summer Recruitment then your information is automatically placed on a list that is sent to all fraternity recruitment chairs.  With your information in hand they can call you about upcoming events and you can participate in Summer Recruitment.

What is a chapter?

A chapter is an individual branch of a larger organization. For example, Beta Beta Beta International Fraternity would be the larger organization, and their specific chapter at a university would start with Alpha, the second would be Beta, third Gamma, etc.

What do fraternities look for in members?Well rounded, balanced men. They look for individuals who are academically, philanthropically, financially and socially responsible. They look for men who possess different qualities, interests, and abilities, in order to build a strong, diverse group of individuals that benefit the entire chapter.

How do I decide which fraternity to join?

To find the fraternity that is the best fit for you, make sure that you talk to about yourself, your interests, and things that matter to you.  When you are hanging out with chapters, make sure to ask questions that reflect what is best for you. The men who are happiest with their chapters are the ones who joined the fraternity because they found they had the most in common with the members.

Can only freshman join a fraternity?

No. The Greek system in non-discriminatory and will accept members of all ages. As long as the member is an enrolled student at the university, they are eligible to join. Often times transfer students will join after their freshman year. A fraternity is a lifelong commitment and age is not a factor.

How expensive is joining?

Firstly, there is no exact amount to put on the experience of Greek life. However, there are monetary costs to membership. The costs to join a fraternity are comparable to those of living in a residence hall.

I heard all fraternities do is party and drink, is that true?

The Animal House stigma is one that fraternities strive to relinquish everyday. News articles and press releases so frequently will expose one slip of a fraternities drinking irresponsibly. However, all members of the Greek Community participate in service activities with to help sponsor cancer foundations, Special Olympics, Alzheimer's Research, Habitat for Humanity, and several other charities.  Also, the Greek Community is very involved in clubs and other student organizations in the WSU community. One other thing to think about is that social activities occur across campus, not just in Greek life. The Interfraternity Council has a Director of Policy and Procedure whose job it is to inforce policies and regulate social events in order to promote a healthy and controlled social atmosphere.
